Slow mornings start with espresso on your patio

Evenings are for sundowners, starlit skies, and the quiet sense that you are somewhere that matters. There are five rooms, which means on most nights we are cooking for ten people. That is deliberate.

Rates are bed and breakfast, per room per night, the same for one guest or two. Breakfast is served 08:30–10:00. Dinner is two courses, decided that morning around whatever came in, and is R 550 per person — let us know the day before. Tell us about allergies when you book and we cook around them.

Beyond the rooms

The pool, the boma, and one long table

A day here

From first light to the last lantern

First light Morning game drive The gate opens while the grass is still grey. Coffee in a steel cup, a blanket over your knees, and the estate already moving. Book a drive → R 1 500 per person
Mid-morning Guided bush walk On foot you notice what the vehicle drives past — a dung beetle working, a chewed marula pip, the print of something that came through before you were awake. Book a walk → R 1 300 per person
Midday The spa The bush goes quiet in the middle of the day. Everything with any sense lies down in the shade and waits it out. This is the hour the spa is for. See treatments → From R 650
Afternoon Into the Greater Kruger Orpen Gate is about an hour from us. Half a day covers the near loops; a full day goes deeper. An afternoon still gets you back for dinner — though the park gates close earlier in midwinter, which makes it a committed afternoon rather than a casual one. Golden hour Sundowners The vehicle stops somewhere facing west, the glasses come out of the box, and for about forty minutes nobody checks the time. Included with any drive
After dark Dinner One table, one menu, two courses. Eaten outside when the weather allows, which in the Lowveld is most of the year. Book dinner → R 550 per person

The spa

The hour nothing moves

The spa is open from ten until five, so it is there for the long middle of the day when the bush has gone quiet and there is nothing to be out for.

Please book at least a day ahead. It is a small diary and that is the only way we can be sure of holding the time you want.

That is the whole menu. It is a small spa with a small diary, which is why we ask for a day’s notice — two if you would like a treatment for two.

Your hosts

Ruan and Jenny

We met on a game reserve in the Eastern Cape — Jenny running the lodges, Ruan out on the vehicle as a field ranger and photographer. We talked for years about having our own place.

In 2020 both our jobs ended in the same month. We drove up to the Kruger for a holiday and did not really leave. We built Muunga through lockdown and opened the week we were allowed to. Ruan still takes the photographs. Between us we are here for most of the things that make a stay work.
